This is the most challenging aspect of retention

High School Directors Need to be Involved

  • As middle school directors, make every effort to include and reach out to the high school directors as much as possible
  • The biggest reason for quitting is fear of the unknown
  • If possible, high school directors should visit your middle school classes on a regular basis

Information and communication are key

  • Consider a future freshman parent meeting before a middle school band concert or during a side-by-side event
  • Future Freshman newsletters
  • Preferred method of communication with the high school directors

Create opportunities for cross-program interaction

Side-by-side events

Middle school night @ football game

MS/HS band social or game night

High school small ensembles or jazz band play as a pre-show to middle school concerts

Post/share high school successes on social media accounts, announcement slides, newsletters, etc.
